A Brief Review of VMware Backup Options

April 27, 2010

In the modern world of computer technologies there is a great deal of “virtualization” occurring. This is a term that describes the use of software to make a single machine function as if it were several. For example, VMware backup options protect the system, application, and user data of each “machine” appearing on a single server.

For example, a VMware backup program could allow a company to reduce hardware and overall operating costs by consolidating the number of servers and machines required, and ensuring that they run at optimal levels. This would be done through data protection and backup solutions that moved important information from the virtual machines to a specially designed server at a high rate of speed and in a way that ensured disaster recovery.

In fact, it is the last issue which is usually the major area of concern for VMware backup options. Consider that most standard recovery solutions are incredibly expensive and yet not all that realistic. This is because the data has to be reviewed with each backup in order to recognize changes, or the entire system is rewritten. This means that a large company backing up data to an offsite location might have to wait hours for the process to be completed. Additionally, most of the data tests are highly disruptive to the network or the server equipment too.

With VMware backup in place the same company could easily send data from a variety of systems to a single secure server. For instance, if the company had a design department that relied strictly on Mac operating systems and software, but an accounting area that used PCs, the virtual machine software could still backup the data quickly and flawlessly to the same, consolidated server. Should some sort of problems occur each of the virtual machines could be instantly restored without any difficulties or any hardware conflicts.

Not only would server consolidation be a cost effective option, but there is always the time factor to consider as well. When a disaster recovery is necessary most businesses do not have the luxury of a great deal of time in which to implement their plans. When the system is already virtualized, the restoring of data can often be done in a matter of a only a short period of time and with the use of still existing hardware. For instance, a server can always be repurposed to store data from a different operating system thanks to the capabilities of virtual machine software and backup options.
